Spin-off Characters from the Doctor Who Random Pairing Generator - Prompts
Apologies for the epicness. Please do not let it put you off swiping ideas or donating your own, but since it’s only a small no. of prompts per character, I thought I’d let it stay as it was. Also, a note – I tend to use the RPG as a starting point for a fic (X meets Y, shenanigans ensue) than shippiness, but obviously they can be used that way, too!

Wikipedia’s List of Spin-Off Companions was enlightening. Although, be warned, SPOILERS – it lists the fates of everyone, too. But a useful Who’s who in non-Who Who. I now know that all these people on the RPG are not in fact people I had forgotten/not seen from SJA and TW or things; they are 1980s comic strip characters...

Okay, who on earth (or not, depending *lol*) is Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart?

a) I've included a link for explaining who everyone is at the top

b) this is actually part two of a discussion post, but I had to post it first to get the link, and then my Mum rang.

c) Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart is a descendent of the Brigadier's from the future, via some relationship he had with someone when out in Africa. I forget details. It's probably on the link. She was created by Ben Aaronovitch and is in the NAs Transit and The Also People (& probably some others, I don't know). Like most things with the NAs it's complicated. :-D The Also People is a book worth tracking down, though.

lost_spook has covered the basics, except to say that the three key novels for Kadiatu are Transit, Set Piece, and The Also People. (I second the recommendation of The Also People. My own copy is much-loved and has been read so much it's starting to come apart. Or maybe that's just cheap binding.)

Also that she was a candidate for companion who got a try-out story but lost to Benny, the same way Ray in "Delta and the Bannermen" lost to Ace. I think that was the right choice; Benny is awesome, and Kadiatu works better as an occasion guest star than I suspect she would have as a regular.

An interesting writerly (and fan-writerly) thing is that although the story of the African Lethbridge-Stewarts first appeared in Transit, there are signs that Ben Aaronovitch had been carrying it around in his head before that, looking for a chance to use it. The big hint is his novelisation of "Remembrance of the Daleks", a few years before the NAs started, where some of the expository chapter heading quotes are from a History of UNIT published in the 21st century, and the name of the History's author, presented without comment, is Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart.

(I actually have a Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart prompt from the Random Pairing Generator that I intend to work up some day, which is for (presumably) the Kadiatu from the NAs, but when I read it it turned into a plotbunny about her ancestor doing research for A History of UNIT.)
