Prompt of the Month #6: March 2011

The result of the poll was overwhelmingly in favour of not having winners (and also ticky boxes were popular, so feel free to include a ticky box in your entries...), so, the usual rules apply, and here goes:

I thought it best to have a Brigadier-related prompt rather than the usual random one; hope nobody minds this once (and it was certainly an idea I'd have put on here anyway).

Prompt of the Month

From lost_spook: The Brigadier in other eras, or other eras with the Brigadier.

When I went looking for Brigadier fic recs the other day, I wanted one for each Doctor/era if possible. (One, of course, might be an exception, but all the rest would be around, yes?) But I found nothing very accessible (in my hasty search - I'm sure I missed things!) for Two, Five, Six or Eight. This is terrible. Please amend at once! I can't at the moment, so I offer this up here hopefully.

As usual, please interpret as loosely as you wish, (but I will be especially happy to see any of the 'missing' Doctors or their companions). Brief encounter, or multi-era madness, all is good.

Rules of the challenge
Fics can be as short or as long as you like. Please post wherever you wish but link back to this post via the comnents (if short enough, comment!fic is fine). The resulting fics/links will be collected together in a post once the challenge closes on Sunday 27th March 2011.

I will post a reminder before then.

There will be banners or icons for anyone taking part. (I'm sure I can make them appropriately Brig-themed.)

(Obviously, the normal business of the comm will continue and all prompts are open for adoption.)

Ha! I'm the midst of a multi-Doctor, multi-Companion Brig fic - but he's dead - I guess that doesn't really count!

I did say 'as freely as possible', but I'll admit I did envisage the Brig being a little more, um, active in said stories. But 'as freely as possible', right? ;-)

I've been trying to write Brig fic since Wednesday night, and not getting too far with it, but it's fic_rush this w/end, so maybe...? And multi-Doctors was sort of what I was thinking of, so we shall see...

If I'm not back in a week or two with a story, somebody POKE ME. I'd be working on mine now (it's mainly a vague idea - which seems to fit the prompt quite well so far - and a couple of lines at this point), but my lappy's in the shop again and I seem to have left my flash drive home. And it's to the point where it wants typing.

Oh, and I thought of this drabble just after posting the fic; it's probably closer to the spirit of the prompt.

"Well, that's all done and dusted," the Doctor said. "Now, we need to go before Commander Radnor starts asking us awkward questions."

"You three go," the Brigadier said. "I shan't be coming with you."

"What?" Zoë gave him an astonished look. "You've only just started travelling with us!"

"Aye," Jamie added. "All you've seen is Krotons and Ice Warriors. There's so much more out there."

"What's happened?" the Doctor asked.

The Brigadier cleared his throat. "Earlier today, Doctor, I asked Miss Kelly for the honour of her hand in marriage. And I am pleased to say that she accepted me."

Am working on a non-funeral!Brig fic - with companions from a couple of different eras and Eight. (It's a sequel to Memory (http://persiflage-1.livejournal.com/286986.html) so that gives you a clue as to who one of the companions is!)

Unexpected (Double Drabble)

“Brigadier!” said Evelyn Smythe, on finding him unexpectedly outside of the TARDIS as she emerged from it into a damp field and a grey day. “Well, what a nice surprise -.”

She saw that he was staring, so she stopped. “I, er, we have met, haven’t we?”

“Of course,” said the Brigadier, his mouth twitching into a smile. “It’s good to see you, too, Dr Smythe, only -. Is the Doctor there with you, drat him?”

“Ah, Brigadier!” proclaimed the Doctor, leaving the TARDIS, and closing the door with a flourish before beaming at his old friend. “What a marvellous coincidence!” He paused. “You know, you don’t look pleased to see me, Alistair.”

The Brigadier lowered his revolver. “This was supposed to be an undercover operation, Doctor. We were trying to lure the Drex out into the open by – never mind.”

“Ah.”

“Oh, dear.”

“…but of course I’m pleased to see you,” finished the Brigadier with a smile. “Perhaps when you’ve finished wrecking our current strategy, you could return to base and think up an alternative?”

“Absolutely,” said the Doctor, following. “Hold on – undercover operation? Aren’t you retired?”

The Brigadier became wry. “That’s what I keep trying to tell them…”

Fic: Things That Did Not Happen In 2011

I come bearing fic. Possibly drawerfic (i.e. the sort of thing one ought to leave in a drawer instead of posting it), but it's what I was working on, and I don't think I'll have anything else relevant.

This is Brig!death fic, so I am whiting it out with my newly acquired knowledge of how to white out spoilers... it is inspired by calapine's excellent "School Reunion" tag His Story (http://calapine.livejournal.com/283748.html). Mostly.

300-ish words, gen, warning for major character death. Characters: Nine, Jamie, Zoe (whence it fits the prompt well - Second Doctor companions), reference to the Brigadier. One of my odd little character studies with no actual dialogue.

Oh, that is not the sort of thing that ought to stay in a drawer! I'm so glad you posted. I know I said I was not keen on Brig!death fic, but I liked that. I liked the idea of the post-Time War bender of grief, as being the only moment when he would actually do something like that. Thanks for posting.
