Hey, it's about time for another discussion of ideas and so on.

I thought about comedy - comedy, crack!fic, gentle humour, dark satire, irony and anything else designed to tickle your funny bone. And proper comedy can be the hardest thing of all to pull off at times. And we all need things to make us laugh every now and then.

It's not as if the show hasn't been there itself more than once *starts humming along to the Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon* ("Let's hope the piano knows it!")

So, & coincidentally, following on thematically from the last post, what humorous stories would you like to see/write, which Doctors, and are there any things that should really be avoided (you know, if you want to show your face in public again)?

And, just for starters, some particularly cracky scenarios the Random Pairing Generator threw at me:

Omega / Rose Tyler / insanity
The Master (Roberts) / Pete Tyler / role reversal
The Meddling Monk / Sara Kingdom / cricket
Fitz Kreiner / Henry Gordon Jago / payback
The Celestial Toymaker / Reinette Poisson / past relationships
Sabalom Glitz / Maxil / years
Clyde Langer / Jamie McCrimmon / accidental kidnapping

The mind boggles... Especially over Fitz and Henry Gordon Jago in some sort of revenge sccenario.

So, go on, what DW fic would you love to see to make you smile? (And what's life without a smile? Or a cliche... Sorry.)

CLYDE AND JAMIE OH MY GOSH. I suspect the world would explode of awesome overload.

(I probably have some actual ideas somewhere in the back of my head... I will consider this!)

Could Pete Tyler ALWAYS DREZZZZ FOR THE OCCASION? Lol!

Looking up at Curu's Ninth Doctor and Yoda's Avie there, I'd love to see that expanded into a ficlet!

The Meddling Monk is one of my fan-fav characters - I can never say why but any excuse to have him in a story is awesome. Maybe it's just because he does what I suspect I might probably do would I have a Time Machine... meddle about with time! But yes, someone should try a fun Meddling Monk story (any Doctor optional)!

If someone told me I was only allowed to read or write one genre of fanfic from now on, the genre I would pick is humor. To me, humor is one of the best things about fandom. Partly it's because laughter really is the best medicine, and partly it's because sometimes the best comments on Doctor Who are contained in humorous fanfic.

I like all kinds of humor, from crack!fic to satire to parody to farce to plain-old comedy (if there is such a thing). No matter what, though, I think a good humorous story turns on a single idea, and then exploits it for all it's worth. That single idea can be a moment (Romana and Duggan have sex (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=32150), or the Doctor asks Sarah about Luke's parentage (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=33686), or Six and Evelyn argue about knitting priorities (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=29636)); or a scenario (Handy goes looking for alien invasions to foil in Pete's World (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=25564), or Ten and Martha disrupt the Council of Elrond (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=19577), or meta-crisis Donna fixes her own brain with a fork and a satellite dish (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=30593)); or it can be an entire humorous premise (a hypothetical Eleventh Doctor story before we know any facts about him (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=29068)); but the humor depends ultimately upon how good the idea is, and how well it's carried off. Sharp writing helps a lot, too.

(By the way, all of the above stories were recced by me on Calufrax. Did I mention that I love humor? Anyway, if you haven't read these yet, give them a try!)

As to what humorous stories I'd like to read or write next, I have no idea! But that's part of the fun of humor -- coming across something wonderful and unexpected.

Well, there's one at least that ought to look familiar to you, considering you wrote it! :D

No need to thank me; I just went through my list of Calufrax recs. I've recced a lot of humor stories, especially considering I've only been a reccer three times!

Here's a thought I've had for a few years and not done anything with: Because they appeared in Deep and Dreamless Sleep by Paul Cornell, Laurel and Hardy can legitimately visit This Time Round.

Given that Ronnie Barker has played an Oliver Hardy impersonator (with Roy Castle as his Stan Laurel) there's probably some kind of Blinovitch Limitation Effect that would kick in.

And of course Roy Castle has (or, at least, a character played by Roy Castle has) an argument for being allowed into the Round, too.

Omega / Rose Tyler / insanity

The tenth calibration shot of the dimension cannon landed Rose in some kind of singularity pocket dimension. That's what the boffins said, anyway, after she'd got back and they'd looked at the instrument readings. At the time, all she knew was that it was a dark void; she thought at first she'd hit one of the fast-running parallels, where everything had already been destroyed by the Daleks, but then she realised that she was standing on something, and breathing.

Also, there was something off in the distance that proved, on closer inspection, to be a man. He was wearing a big helmet and metallic robes that reminded her of the protective gear the boffins had made her wear on the first few shots, only way more ostentatious, so maybe he was a dimension hopper, too. She tried to tell him about the Daleks threatening to destroy the multiverse, but all that happened was he started ranting about how he didn't exist, so he didn't care whether everything else ceased to exist too.

Nutter, she thought, and left him to it.

Good job he didn't try to follow her when she left :-)

Sabalom Glitz / Maxil / years

I don't know how this one goes on, but obviously it starts with Glitz mistaking Maxil for the Doctor, approaching him overfamiliarly, and remarking that it's been years since he last saw him, and may he say how much his dress sense has improved?
